Weed in Germany: What Tourists Can and Cannot Do

Weed in Germany: What Tourists Can and Cannot Do

Short answer: Cannabis is partly legal in Germany, but you cannot simply walk into a shop and buy weed as a tourist. Here is what visitors really need to know, in plain words.

Is weed legal in Germany?

Since 2024, adults aged 18 and over may possess up to 25 grams of dried cannabis in public and up to 50 grams at home. Adults may also grow up to three plants at their place of residence. Consumption is allowed, but not everywhere.

Can tourists buy weed in Germany?

No, not legally. There are no coffeeshops like in the Netherlands and no licensed recreational shops. Cannabis is not sold over the counter. The legal ways to get it are home growing and membership in a cannabis social club, and clubs only admit people who live in Germany. Tourists do not qualify. Medical cannabis needs a German prescription and is dispensed by pharmacies.

Be careful with anyone offering weed on the street. Buying from dealers remains illegal.

Where can I smoke weed?

Smoking is banned within sight of schools, daycare centres, playgrounds, youth facilities and public sports grounds, and in pedestrian zones between 7 am and 8 pm. Smoking in the presence of minors is also not allowed. Our prohibition zones map (in German) shows the restricted areas on a map.

Can I bring weed to or from Germany?

Do not take cannabis across a border. Even between EU countries it can be a crime, and airports check luggage. The German legalisation does not apply abroad. Read more in our (German) guide Cannabis im Urlaub.

Driving after cannabis

A THC limit of 3.5 ng/ml in blood serum applies on the road. Mixing cannabis and alcohol is banned, and novice drivers face stricter rules. Details in German: Cannabis und Autofahren.

What you can do instead
